Walking along minding my own business when this strange bird noise made me look up and see this stunning green and blue and red bird. Then the little fucker shat on me. A massive fucking splurge of bird crap on my BRAND NEW white shirt. Cunt of a bird should of been pecking on some tree instead of messing up my new shirt. Wanker bird.

Behaviour and physiology probably evolved in parallel. Some insect-eating birds found rotten wood a good place to find food, and those with slightly thickened and spongy skulls would be able to tackle less rotten wood. The offspring of those that had slightly thick and spongy skulls would exploit even less rotten wood, and so on, until you got a fully fledged woodpecker pecking healthy wood.
The grub of woodpeckers is mostly grubs, I think.

There's a green woodpecker living near our house. Every morning it wakes us with its loud repetitive pecking. You'd think it would give itself a headache before giving us one.

Hmm. Perhaps.
But they hammer with such astonishing rapidity it sounds more like a whirring rattle. In typically human centric ignorance, Finnish might associate a woodpecker knocking as being similar to the slower strokes a human would make with a hammer.
We'll solve the mystery between us.
